Local actor Per Egil Aske is back at Teatret Vårt after many years of performing at the National Theatre. He plays a fictitious person in a universe consisting of very real historical people – both alive and dead – in a real town in north-west Norway with its own jazz festival that is celebrating its 50th anniversary in a setting of fjords and mountains and summer nights. Mankell's story is a tribute to the music, the genius and the great artistic experience, but it also praises the small world in which normal people live, that occasionally can collide with the really big, wide world. During the performance, we meet Miles Davies on his way to town from Molde Airport Årø, a not entirely unknown Head Chauffeur from the jazz festival staff, a scrap dealer with an interest in jazz and a cuckoo clock from Montreux. And obviously there is music and memories of music. Memories that will never fade as long as we keep retelling the stories, as long as someone continues to play and someone is willing to listen. Listen to the blue notes in the summer night and the stories of how the world began, and the music – in the key Our Lord uses when he's composing.
After the very first performance, Svein Rune Nyland from the local newspaper Romsdals Budstikke gave the show top marks and wrote: "The prodigal son Per Egil Aske left the stage to the sound of a standing ovation. He had mesmerized the audience with the story of his friend and Miles Davies. What in the world can a jazz legend and a stalwart local from Molde have in common?"!
«Driving Miles» premiered during Moldejazz 2010 and was the theatre's gift to the festival. It is a joint production between Teatret Vårt and Moldejazz.
