The little lady with the big sax |

The baritone sax is a full-bodied and demanding instrument with a limited number of top-notch performers: Harry Carney, Gerry Mulligan, John Surman, Pepper Adams, Serge Chaloff – and perhaps a few others. Enter 35-year-old Céline Bonacina from Paris. Without apparent effort she guides the big horn through complicated phrases and structures while at the same time keeping up a basic groove that is further emphasised by drummer Hary Ratzoimbazafy from Madagascar and bass player Nicolas Garnier. Well-known guitarist Nguyên Lê describes her as follows:‘There is such a contrast between Céline’s graceful appearance, her gentle and spiritual yet also slightly impish manner, and the fire which burns in every single one of her sounds.’Now, one of France’s best-kept and most exciting secrets is ready for the rest of the world – see her in Molde.
