John McLaughlin
John McLaughlin is returning to Molde 25 years after the concert with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Idrettens Hus in 1986. Master guitarist McLaughlin, who made his international breakthrough with Miles Davis, has a fantastic carrier behind him. With his new band, 4th Dimension, he is more dynamic than ever, and tickets to his concert at Bjørnsonhuset on 21 July are expected to sell out fast.

English-born John McLaughlin has been an influential guitarist for more than 40 years, both in traditional contemporary jazz and in more rock and fusion-based contexts. In London in the mid-1960s, he collaborated with Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame and Brian Auger, to name but a few, before releasing his debut album with drummer Tony Oxley and saxophonist John Surman.

That same year, McLaughlin travelled to the USA where, through Tony Williams' group Lifetime, he soon became involved in Miles Davis’ electric jazz revolution, including on the album 'Bitches Brew', which even has a track named after him! In the world of jazz, there is no greater accolade! Over time, McLaughlin’s reputation as a first-class session musician led to collaborations with many different artists, including Carla Bley, Wayne Shorter and the Rolling Stones! In 1973, together with guitar contemporary Carlos Santana, he developed an interest in Indian music and religion, which clearly influences the groups Mahavishnu Orchestra and, not least, Shakti, McLauglin’s two main projects in the 1970s. He also achieved great success with the acoustic trio featuring Al di Meola and flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, a group that for years has been an important reference for improvised and virtuoso guitar ensembles both with respect to creativity and tempo. In 1986, McLaughlin appeared in Betrand Tavernier’s Oscar-nominated film Round Midnight starring Dexter Gordon.

Over the past 20 years, McLaughlin has been particularly active as a composer, and has written music for both symphony orchestras and ballet productions as well as for the various bands he has formed. At times, he has turned to musicians he played with earlier in his career, but he has also kept his eyes open for new musicians and more modern forms of expression. The fact that his contemporaries Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton and Frank Zappa have all looked up to him and cited him as a source of inspiration is testament to his influence on guitar jazz – as are the 100 albums plus he has released on his own and in collaboration with others.
