Dave Holland

The British bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Holland will be Artist in Residence at this year’s Molde International Jazz Festival. Ever since he joined Miles Davis’ band in 1968, Dave has distinguished himself as one of the most influential bassists in modern jazz. As bassist for Miles Davis, he played on the milestone jazz albums In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

In the 1970s, Dave played in groups such as Circle, with Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton and Barry Altschul and in Gateway with John Abercrombie and Jack De Johnette. In 1972, he recorded his first album in his own right entitled Conference of the Birds with Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton. This album also stands as a milestone in the history of modern jazz.
Since the early 1980s, Dave has led bands in various formats, from trios, quarters, quintets, sextets, octets to big bands. He released a series of critically acclaimed albums on ECM up until 2005, when he founded his own company Dare2 Records in order to gain full control over the whole artistic process.
The Molde International Jazz Festival will present Dave Holland in five different musical contexts that will show the breadth of his musical artistry. The opening concert in Bjørnsonhuset on Monday 18 July will be the venue for a musical encounter between Dave Holland and the legendary Spanish flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichuela and his quintet. This collaboration was documented in the critically acclaimed CD Hands, released in 2010.
Molde Cathedral will be the venue for the festival’s closing concert and a meeting of two other musical masters. In 1999, the Tunisian oud (Arab lute) maestro Anoua Brahem initiated a collaborative project with saxophonist John Surman and bassist Dave Holland. The result was the fantastic album Thimar on ECM. For years we have wanted to introduce this musician to our audience – and this year we have finally succeeded. In addition to these two concerts, Dave Holland will give a solo concert and take part in two collaborative projects. Dates and venues for these concerts will be announced later.
