New York quartet Mostly Other People Do the Killing has received well-deserved attention in the concert and record-buying market in the last few years. They play humorous and catchy jazz based on the ‘whole’ history of jazz. The album covers of their last four records also clearly pay tribute to different jazz musicians such as Art Blakey, Keith Jarret, Ornette Coleman and Ray Haynes. The melodies written by bassist Moppa Elliot – catchy tunes packed with jazz history that push the boundaries of the genre – are always named after small places in Pennsylvania. MOPDtK cleverly manages to combine humour and virtuosity and tradition and innovation Peter Evans – trumpet, Joe Irabagon – saxophone, Moppa Elliott – bass, Kevin Shea – drums.
