The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten summed up the 2004 Molde International Jazz Festival as follows: ‘Then came the festival’s big surprise, 17-year-old Troy Andrews from New Orleans, brought in at the last moment as a stand-in for the trumpeter/vocalist Kermit Ruffins, who was supposed to front the trad jazz youth band Dixi. And we got the chance to hear the stand-in demonstrate a technique and joy in his playing that made it clear that Nicholas Payton was one of his musical influences. During a chat with Troy in the interval, he revealed that the trombone was in fact his main instrument, but as the stand-in for Ruffins he had had to play the trumpet instead! If this young man develops in the right way, there’s every chance that in a few years’ time Troy Andrews will be outshining his idols.’ And that is exactly what he has done! Performing under the stage name Trombone Shorty, he has become a shooting star on the American jazz scene, performing music in the best New Orleans tradition blended with funk, blues, pop and hip-hop. Music critics have bestowed him with titles such as Performer of the Year, but more importantly, audiences have learned to appreciate the young Troy: his 2010 CD release Backatown topped Billboard’s jazz listings for nine weeks, and many of his concerts on the impressively long tour scheduled for spring and summer 2011 are already sold out.
