John Escreet
English pianist John Escreet, who now lives in Brooklyn, has in the space of just a few years built a reputation as both a highly talented performer and a distinctive composer, who writes songs that are both melodically and rhythmically intricate.

The CDs he released with his quintet - ’Consequences’ and ’Don’t fight The Inevitable’ – saw the critics being really lavish in their use of superlatives. In autumn 2010, Escreet formed a trio with bass player John Herbert and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Their debut concert at Jazz Gallery in New York was brilliant, and we were never in any doubt that this band had to be part of this year’s Molde Jazz programme. With the trio, the compositions are much more open and give the musicians more room and freedom. At the concert in Molde, Eivind Opsvik will play bass, while multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey, one of the foremost musicians on the New York jazz scene, will be on drums.
