The long-established Magnolia Jazzband has been around for almost 40 years, a history that has been documented in 11 albums and numerous concerts at home in Norway and abroad. Throughout its history, the band has remained faithful to authentic and original New Orleans jazz, with its diversity of influences from blues, ragtime and gospel. In this melting pot of musical genres, a tradition gradually evolved of a distinctive beat, New Orleans Revival Jazz, which particularly comes to the fore in street parades and religious church music. Over the years, Magnolia Jazzband has made many pilgrimages to the city situated at the mouth of the Mississippi River, and many of the albums they have released were recorded there. Nonetheless, they have never shied away from incorporating Norwegian and Scandinavia psalms into their repertoire, played with the natural respect and sincerity such music demands.
Lillian Boutté was born and raised in New Orleans, and already as a young girl took an active part in the gospel choir at her local Catholic church. Lillian has collaborated with Magnolia Jazzband for many years, and this year sees the 30th anniversary of the release of the album recording of the church concert held during the Molde International Jazz Festival in 1981. Many of the members of that church audience still count that experience as one of the best ever. It is high time for a repeat performance – with a band that is better than ever before, both together and as soloists ‒ and with a vocalist who knows her roots and who has a unique ability to convey the fundamental musical traditions of the capital city of jazz, New Orleans.
