One of our greatest vocalists goes back to her roots

What could be more fitting than personal interpretations of beloved psalms when Solveig Slettahjell takes the stage in Molde Domkirke for the festivals traditional church-concert. Bring along, in addition to her regular band, the local Fuglset Mannskor who, this very year, celebrate their 70th anniversary.

Ever since she first surfaced in Oslo's jazz-scene in the late 90's, Solveig Slettahjell has established herself as one of our truly great vocalists. With, among others, Mats Eilertsen and Morten Qvenild she has, through the group Slow Motion Orchestra, given us some of the most beautiful and melodic pieces of Norwegian jazz for the past 15 years.

Slettahjell, daughter of a priest, grew up with, and as part of, church music, and it is well known that the same could easily be said about jazz. Slettahjell has previously returned to, and offered us her personal interpretations of, church music. With Natt i Betlehem (2008) a handful of Christmas songs were the objects of her interpretation. With last years Arven - on record in duo with none other than Tord Gustavsen - its the psalms that receive Slettahjell's respectful and sonorous treatment.

In Molde Domkirke on Thursday, July 17th, Slettahjell brings along Sjur Miljeteig on trumpet, Nils Økland on fiddle, and, as mentioned, the singers of Fuglset Mannskor.
