Jazz, rock and Arabian tones

Ibrahim Maalouf was born into an intellectually gifted family in Beirut in 1980. With a pianist for mother, and a trumpeter for father, Malouf was quite literally born to be a musician. During the Lebanese war the family left Beirut to re-settle in Paris where, at the age of seven, Ibrahim first started playing the trumpet.

Maalouf is in principle a classically trained trumpeter, but since the early 2000's he has been flirting with popular music, as well as traditional Arabic music and jazz. In addition to the so far five albums released under his own name Maalouf has performed side by side with artists such as Sting, Elvis Costello and Amadou & Mirriam.

On his own Ibrahim Maalouf is a man of fusion. With an electric band and Arabian undertones Maalouf presents to us his very own type of fusion. Funky, fuzzed and sensitively melodic - and not to forget, at times with four trumpets at once. It's not a bad idea to dust off your dancing shoes!

"I defy anyone not to be seduced by Maalouf's giddy mix of Eastern and Western rhythms", wrote the British newspaper The Times about Illusions (2013).

Well, I guess the only thing that remains then is to be seduced.

Check out "Nomade Slang" from Illusions, here as an acoustic piece performed for French television.
