His band were amongst the first jazz-groups to perform at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Fransisco. On the verge of his breakthrough as the "new superstar of jazz" Lloyd withdrew from the stressful world of music. After close to ten years in almost total isolation he returned, and since then he has been one of jazz' most prolific band-leaders.
Quality of tone is an important part of Charles Lloyds' musical signature, as it was with earlier greats like Lester Young and Ben Webster. In contemporary jazz sound has partially been cast aside by technique, but as Lloyd says: "Without a good sound, all those notes don't really mean anything." For his concert at Bjørnsonhuset on July 17th Lloyd brings the band "Sangam"; a band that have received excellent reviews everywhere!
