Jason Moran - Artist in Residence 2013
Ever since pianist Jason Moran entered the world of music in the late 1990s he has shown to be more than just an amazing performer. He's a reflected and, at times, provocative thinker, a musician that time and time again takes new risks and stakes out new paths and directions in contemporary jazz. Moran has staked his claim as a pianist with no technical limitations, a brilliant improviser, an exciting composer and arranger, and a band-leader with strong qualities. As Artist in Residence we'll get to meet Jason Moran in five concerts; each showcasing different sides of his vast talent.

The opening concert  «In My Mind» is a multimedial concert which is Jason Morans tribute to, and exploration of, the music of one of his biggest inspirations; pianist Thelonious Monk.

Bandwagon has been Jason Moran's trio for more than 10 years. Drummer Nasheet Waits is the man "everyone" wants to play with, but despite this he has prioritized Moran's trio highly. Together with bass-player Tarus Mateen and Moran himself he contributes to a band which Bjørn Stendahl of Jazznytt described as follows: ?the musicians break into each other's solo performances ..... unorthodox and defining... and because they know each other so well it is very successful ..... in an energetic and blues-saturated expression.

Moran ends his stay in Molde with a concert in the Molde Cathedral  joint by his wife, singer Alicia Hall Moran. And if this wasn't enough another two concerts are being planned!

Charles Lloyd - "SANGAM"
Charles Lloyd is one of the unique personalities in jazz. In the 1960s he did "Forest Flower" with, amongst others, Keith Jarreth; one of the first jazzrecords to sell more than 1.000.000 copies. His band were amongst the first jazz-groups to perform at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Fransisco. On the verge of his breakthrough as the "new superstar of jazz" Lloyd withdrew from the stressful world of music. After close to ten years  in almost total isolation he returned, and since then he has been one of jazz' most prolific band-leaders.
Quality of tone is an important part of Charles Lloyds' musical signature, as it was with earlier greats like Lester Young and Ben Webster. In contemporary jazz sound has partially been cast aside by technique, but as Lloyd says: "Without a good sound, all those notes don't really mean anything." For his concert at Bjørnsonhuset on July 17th Lloyd brings the band "Sangam"; a band that have received excellent reviews everywhere!

Zakhir Hussain - Tablas
Eric Harland - Drums

Tim Berne - Snakeoil
Saxophone-player and composer Tim Berne was ranked in the Top 10 when the magazine Time Out released their list of "Important Jazzicons of New York" last year. Berne has been a central musician in New Yorks downtown-scene since the early 1980s. His new band, "Snakeoil", released a recording at ECM last year and received very positive reviews from a unison press. Freedom and discipline have always been central elements in Berne's musical universe  and this has carried through into "Snakeoil". All the music is written by Berne and is characterized by compositional control and open collective improvisation.  In other words; a lot of variation, with long streaks of meditative states, rough expulsions and intricate rhythmical structures.

Oscar Noriega - Clarinets
Matt Michell - Piano
Ches Smith - Drums/percussion

«Tradjazz in the basement ("Tradjazz i kjelleren")»
«Tradjazz in the basement» is the name of the new concert-style premiering at Moldejazz 2013 in Alexandrakjelleren; a place rich on history and tradition. The music will be New Orleans-jazz as earlier presented by Moldejazz in "New Persperation Hall" with the only difference being that there wil no longer be food served. We are sure the mood will be just as "steamy" as before, and due to the limited capacity of Alexandrakjelleren we anticipate that tickets won't remain unsold for long. During this years festival Ytre Suløens Jass-ensemble and Union Rhythm Kings are set to share Alexandrakjelleren.

Ytre Suløens Jass-Ensemble

Ytre Suløens Jass-ensemble have, over the past few years, seen a lot of renewal. Kåre Nymark jr. was replaced by Sturla Hauge Nilsen on trumpet, and trombone-player Jan Inge "Mella" Melsæter has been replaced by Andreas Rotevatn. Last year Kristoffer Tokle took up the drums after the death of Ottar Andersen who had been the regular drummer for many years. The new members have contributed to renewing the "Ytre Suløen-sound" while remaining faithful to the musical idea of the group. They offer an exciting mixture of ragtime, gospel, Caribbean music, blues and swing. The New Orleans music has always been the foundation of the band, and with Tricia Boutté on vocals, herself born and raised in the port city on the Mississippi outlet, the history is brought even closer.

Morten Gunnar Larsen - Piano
David Gald - Tuba

Union Rhythm Kings
A fitting name for a band that plays traditional New Orleans-jazz and that have been assembled across generations and borders. The "rhythm kings" were started in 2007 after a initiative from trombone-player Kristoffer Kompen. The band consists of a wonderful mix of both seasoned young-and-promising jazz-musicians who have made made themselves strongly noted in a number of contexts within traditional jazz.
