The English master guitarist John McLaughlin is returning to Molde 25 years after his last visit. On 21 July, he will play at Bjørnsonhuset with the 4th Dimension Band, with bassist Etienne M’Bappe playing a key role. The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, one of the UK’s leading big bands, led by saxophonist Tommy Smith, has created a tribute to the music and musicians of the record label ECM by selecting a number of famous songs from the company’s huge catalogue. The songs have been arranged by Mike Gibbs, Geoff Keezer, Makoto Ozone, among others, for a big band format, and our own star bassist Arild Andersen will be soloist in the concert at Bjørnsonhuset on Saturday 23 July.
Style icon and legend Lee Konitz is still going strong and, together with Tomasz Stanko, he has formed a new quintet with Craig Taborn on piano, Thomas Morgan on bass and Jim Black on drums. The quintet will open a fantastic club week at Alexandrakjelleren on Monday 18 July. Alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, who has received a great deal of attention with the release ‘Decisive Steps’ and as a member of Beyoncé’s tour band, among other things, will be making her debut in Norway with her quartet. New York band Mostly Other People Do the Killing has received a lot of well-deserved attention from the concert and music-buying markets in the last few years for its humorous and catchy jazz based on the 'whole' history of jazz. The Arild Andersen Trio has enjoyed great success with the CD ‘Live at Belleville’ in addition to tours and concerts in Norway and abroad. Danish pianist Carsten Dahl will accompany them as their guest for the concert in Molde. He will also be performing with his own band, the Carsten Dahl Experience, featuring the distinctive saxophonist Jesper Zeuthen. The week at Alexandrakjelleren concludes with the Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset and his band Golden Xplosion, a musician and a band whose latest release received a great deal of positive attention.
Molde International Jazz Festival favourites Ytre Suløens Jassensemble will play in the New Perspiration Hall Monday to Wednesday and the hard-swinging Christianssand String Swing Ensemble will play Thursday to Saturday.
Week passes will be available for purchase on the announcement of this line-up.
