The British bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Holland will be Artist in Residence at this year’s Molde Jazz Festival. Ever since he joined Miles Davis’ band in 1968, Dave has distinguished himself as one of the most influential bassists in modern jazz. As bassist for Miles Davis, he was involved in the jazz history milestone albums In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.
Three of today’s most popular vocalists, Angelique Kidjo, Dianne Reeves and Lizz Wright, have come together in the project entitled SING THE TRUTH! to pay tribute to some of the most influential black singers of jazz, folk, blues r&b and gospel over the years, with Miriam Makeba, Abbey Lincoln and Odetta as their primary sources of inspiration, as well as Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill. The Molde Jazz Festival is delighted to be able to present them in concert in Bjørnsonhuset on 19 July.
In the course of its 14 years of existence, Supersilent has become one of the world’s most acclaimed improvisaton ensembles, so it was not surprising that the multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones seized the opportunity to play with them when given the chance at last year’s Punkt Festival. John Paul Jones has had a long and eventful musical career, part of which was spent with Led Zeppelin. Even today, almost 50 years after his career began, he continues his success in projects such as the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures. The spontaneous and 100% improvised collaboration with Supersilent left both sides wanting more, and now they meet again for a return duel at the Cultural Centre in Molde.
Stian Westerhus is one of our most exciting instrumentalists. His unorthodox guitar style is exciting and effective, producing a sound that gives the effect of an entire band. Thanks to Sparebank 1 SMN’s scholarship award JazZtipendiat 2010, he now has the opportunity to put together his own version of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, with musicians such as Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Kjetil Møster and Ola Kvernberg.
Pianist and composer Jon Balke has been commissioned to write original music to the vocal improvisation ensemble Trondheim Voices, to which he has added the percussion group Batagraf.
Thirty years ago, the Magnolia Jazz Band and Lillian Boutté from New Orleans gave a concert and made a live recording in Molde Cathedral. Now they return with their version of New Orleans gospel.
There will be six nights of full blast and great atmosphere when the up and coming star Trombone Short, the city's own Red Hot and New York band Hazmat Modine combine blues, jazz, klezmer, calypso, funk and whatever else it takes to put on a fantastic show.
