Ytre Suløens Jassensemble was founded in 1973 by a group of friends from Langevåg, a village at the northwest coast of Norway. Ytre Suløen Jassensemble was one of the most important bands in the Norwegian "traditional jazz" movement of the 1970's and 1980's. However they soon started to broaden their musical platform, seeking to come close to the spirit of the New Orleans style rather than just copying the old masters' repertoire and style. in the late 1980's they started experimenting with modern jazz, playing music by playing music by Charles Mingus, Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Wynton Marsalis and Roland Kirk as well as traditional artists like Jelly Roll Morton and Clarence Williams. This of course caused enragement among the purists at first, but gradually the band regained respect for and acceptance of their "Ytre Suløen sound.
The band existed for 15 years with the same members that started it. In the following five years there was different changes of personnel - before the band as it exists today was established in 1992. Three of the original members are still with the band: Einar Aaro (bjo/gtr), Ottar Anderson (dr) and Jens Arne Molvær (cl/sax). The others are: Kaare Nymark (trp), Jan Inge Melsæter (trb), David Gald (tba) and Askjell Molvær (pno).
In 1976 Ytre Suløens Jassensemble was invited to perform at The New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, making it the first Norwegian band ever to be invited to an American Jazz Festival.
Since then they have been back to New Orleans many times to play, as well as New York and other places in USA, Canada (Expo 1986), Africa, different places in Europe and of course around in Scandinavia.
Through the 27 years, Ytre Suloens Jass-ensemble have made 16 albums. The last one (Blue River - 1999) features the Brazilian cellist Gustavo Tavarez as a solist in Kurt Weill's "Youkali Tango". |
