Get ready for a smoldering reunion between Red Hot and the Moldejazz-audience in Alexandraparken on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 July. Local band Josah, whom has released a new album since last years festival, perform on the same days at 21:00. On Friday and Saturday at 23:00 it's Ole Børud that takes the stage in Alexandraparken. With his 8-man band the live-favourite will prove why he's regarded as a world-class west-coast rocker. On Friday at 21:00 Urørt-finalist and Norways new soul-princess Miss Tati will perform. And on Saturday at 21:00 former Montée bass-player Maya Vik invites you to a funk-firework of a concert. Electronica-favourite Proviant Audi will present new material in Teateret Vårt at PLASSEN on Friday 17th of July at 24:00. And last, but not least; Dr. Kay & His Interstellar Tone Scientists will host a enchanting Sun Ra-inspired closure of Moldejazz at Teateret Vårt on July 18th at 24:00.
Rhythm & blues band Red Hot emerged when the members studied music together at Molde High-school, exactly 10 years ago. A common albeit alternating musical taste with common roots in blues evolved into Red Hot's mix of hard hitting coherent rockabilly, R&B and funk.
And that the band truly swings when performing live is something that is attested by everyone who has visited Moldejazz in the past few years. In 2013 vocalist Knut Marius Djupvik participated in, and won, the Norwegian version of The Voice - something which caused the bands popularity to reach new heights.
Knut Marius Djupvik - vocals, Magnus Drågen - trumpet, Pål Gunnar Fiksdal - trum pet, Runar Fiksdal - trombone, Lars Petter Bjerkeset - saxophone, Chriss Rune Angvik - guitar, Øystein Flemmen - guitar, Jørn Inge Frostad - el bass, Anders Lillebo - Hammond-organ, Kristoffer Tokle - drums, Kristian Frøland - percussion
Vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ole Børud has lived a rich and varied music-life. Already at the age of five he joined his father, gospel-musician Arnold Børud, in the family-band Børud-gjengen.
Since then his road has taken him through various forms of metal, primarily with reputable Extol, a band where he's still a member of. Børud still did a solo-thrust with a more pop-rock influenced sound already in 2002, but with the re-launch of his solo-career in 2008 and the album Shakin' the Ground, as well as subsequent releases, he truly found his form in a different musical landscape.
Since Shakin' the Ground he's released the albums Keep Movin and last years Stepping Up (in addition to the Christmas-album Someday at Christmas with Samuel Ljungblahd). On these albums the expression has been based on funk-pop, 70's and 80's soul and west-coast rock, and jazz-pop, presented in a modern and fresh wrapping. A funky and tight rhythm-section, dramatic brass-section, captivating guitar-licks and with Børud's distinct vocal at the forefront. Here you can find traces of Steely Dan's precision, the groove of the two Georges Benson and Duke, the playfulness of Prince and the song-flair of Toto, without it necessarily sounding like any of them.
Producer and multi-instrumentalist Mathias Stubøs six-man disco-orchestra, Proviant Audio, released the album «Drift Days & Disco Nights» in 2013. The tone-setting international journal of electronic music, DJ Mag, praised the album fondly, and Stubø truly made a name for himself both as a electronica and hip-hop artist garnering high praise domestically as well as abroad. During the spring of 2015 the band is poised to release a new album, and they've also been given the honors of closing out the already funky Friday evening at Teateret Vårt.
Bass-player and vocalist Maya Vik has over the past few years focused on a international solo-career, after formerly having been a member of among others the award-winning pop-group Montée. Singles «On It (Kapow!)», «Oslo Knows», and «Fighter» have been played on high-rotation and Norwegian and American radio, and the Prince-inspired artist has played at clubs and festivals around the world.
Maya Vik's music has strong roots in 80's electro-pop, disco and funk - pimped to her own, modern universe.
Her sound is characterized by funky bass-lines, soft soul-vocals and 80's inspired synth-elements backed up by tight rhythms, but also with room for taking it all the way down with soft ballads of the same, high quality as the rest of her repertoire.
Aftenposten writes that Maya Vik is a gift to fans of old electro-pop. She goes at it with disco-funk and aims for the dance-floor, this is music that puts you in a good mood, write Gaffa. With her trio Maya now invites you to a funk-firework of a concert in Alexandraparken.
Norway's new soul-princess has proven to be both a born entertainer, as well as a fresh addition to the vocal soul/hip-hop stage. She is based in Bergen, born in Portugal, and with roots from Angola - and one of the winners of Årets Forbildepris (Role Model of the Year) during By:larm. As one of this years Urørt-finalists she's won over a lot of dance-loving hearts with her vocal prowess and stage presence.
Miss Tati's sound gravitates towards soul, but she also masterfully incorporates genres hip-hop, jazz and funk. Inspiration from The Ikettes and Tina Turner, and musical tendencies to Janelle Monàe, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu nonetheless - Miss Tati has found her own musical DNA and stakes her own path through and through. Her latest single Shakedown, with its driving rhythm and catchy chorus, Miss Tati herself describes as the perfect aperitif of what is to come, which bodes well. P3 describe her live performances as both playful and genuine, where her switching between fervently rapping and unrestrained vocal-performances are just as comfortable as the mood it creates in the audience. Catching Miss Tati's show in Alexandraparken will be well worth it if you're looking for a concert where a soulful voice mixes with moving tones, american-influenced rap and tropical rhythms that insist on making you dance.
Since their previous performance at Moldejazz in 2014 the Molde-band Josah has released their second full-length album «Dipole», and by doing so taken another important step in their career.
On «Dipole» you become familiar with the full width of Josah's musical spectrum, they're both darker and more progressive on this album than they were on their debutalbum «Stars And Lightballs», without having sacrificed any of the playfulness that is some of the bands brand.
With a versatile background from jazz to rock the bandmembers fearlessly play with genres and obtain a truly unique style connecting with a large audience.
Jonas Høgseth - guitar & vocals, Sindre Klykken - bass & background vocals, Joachim Orvik - drums and background vocals
Dr. Kay & His Interstellar Tone Scientists
The Search for True Happiness, Dr. Kay & His Interstellar Tone Scientists debut-album of 2013, is a wonderful, metaphorical journey where free-spirited «space»-jazz as means of transport, as a tool. The sound of meandering vintage keys, driving bass and drums, diverse percussion-instruments and a jubilant bunch of woodwind and brass in perfect harmony.
Both the well-chosen pseudonym of the band-leader, the linguistic images, the bands musical template, as well as the colorful and often imaginative accouterments they wear when performing their shows, quickly direct thoughts to the maestro Sun Ra and his Arkestra. But with Dr. Kay and his companions you also find traces of other, spiritual and searching 60's jazz, among others Pharoah Sanders.
In many ways Dr. Kay & His Tone Scientists combine multiple aspects of jazz. That's not to say all of its genre variations, but different sides of the music that some might experience as contradictory, but which Dr. Kay proves are quite compatible. Together with his band he shapes them into a higher, ecstatic and inclusive unity; it's artistically devious while at the same time being entertaining, it's wild but also groovy danceable, imaginative and at the same time close to reality. Intergalactic and down to earth.
Among the members of Dr. Kay & His Interstellar Tone Scientists you find representatives from several of Norway's most exciting and promising jazz- and pop-bands, such as Mopti, Pixel and The Switch. It's all set for an enchanting ending of this years festival!
Arthur Kay Piene (Dr. Kay) - moog, vocals, Harald Lassen - saxophone, Kasper Værnes - saxophone, André Roligheten - saxophone, Lars Frank - saxophone, Kristoffer Eikrem - trumpet, Øyvind Brække - trombone, Tore Flatjord - drums, percussion, Andreas Wildhagen - drums, percussion, Adrian Myhr - bass
