Molde Cathedral will host both gospel and Daniel Herskedal.

On July 15th, Wednesday of the festival-week, we're set for a unique occasion in Molde Cathedral when Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (USA) and Skruk (NOR) collaborate in a tribute to the roots of both choirs; traditional gospel music. In total, close to 100 members will contribute to make this a powerful, yet dynamic experience - well helped by the two charismatic leaders Terence Kelly and Per Oddvar Hildre. And on Friday the 17th a new, exciting concert takes place in Molde Cathedral as Daniel Herskedal presents his new project Slow Eastbound Train.

Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir consists of, as indicated by the name, members of different religious backgrounds, with no less than 13 different faiths represented in its current lineup. Common to them all however is the joy and cohesion they find in gospel music. The choir has released three albums, and this summer they tour Europe where Moldejazz is the third concert of the tour after playing at Montreux Jazz Festival and in Copenhagen.

Skruk is a familiar name for the Moldejazz-audiences after multiple performances, the last one to date back in 2007 when they took the stage with Nymark Collective. The choir has been part of some of the festival's most memorable moments, such as the "Hallelujazz" concert with Ytre Suløens Jass-Ensemble in 1982, and the five sold-out concerts when the two again collaborated in 2003. Under the direction of Per Oddvar Hildre, aka. Prots, from the very beginning in 1973, the choir has shifted genre-boundaries and spearheaded Norwegian choir-music. Through they years the choir has found - and been found by - exciting, musical collaborators nationally as well as abroad.

The new collaboration of Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and Skruk was formed after Skruk held concerts in California a couple of years ago. Representatives from OIGC heard them perform, and were so excited that they promptly suggested a joint project. The project has now come to life under the name "Røtter" (trans: "Roots"), and is based around the fact that, despite cultural differences between the American and Norwegian west--coasts, we have common spiritual roots. Difference in upbringing, culture and behavior lead to different ways to express onself, which colors the songs musically as well as lyrically. The concert in Molde Cathedral will alternate between the two choirs singing individually, as well as parts where they both sing together. The last is set to be a truly exciting unison, and as "Prots" himself says; "a new musical latte". We have every reason to believe that this "latte" is something the Moldejazz-audience will enjoy, and maybe this will become a new, legendary concert at Moldejazz.

Daniel Herskedal

Daniel Herskedal, born in Molde in 1982, is definitely one of the most exciting tuba-players in contemporary jazz. Daniel is currently based in Copenhagen / Molde, and his musical path has consisted of, among other things, jazz-studies at NTNU and a Masters degree in Jazztuba at Rhythm Music Conservatory of Copenhagen, where he later stayed on to teach. In addition he has played with artists and bands such as Django Bates, Jason Moran, Helene Bøksle, Trondheim Jazzorkester and Marius Neset. Herskedal has made commissioned works for both Olavsfestdagene, Soddjazz and Moldejazz.

His latest project and album, "Slow Eastbound Train", has come to life in a collaboration with pianist Eyolf Dale, percussionist Helge Andreas Nordbakken, and Trondheimssolistene. With the exception of an interpretation of Modest Mussorgskys "Bydlo", Herskedal has written all the music himself, and t he result is as unique as it is captivating; a result of his diverse musical interests, and his distinct - dare we say virtuosic - style of playing, together with a handful of highly skilled co-musicians.

We find touches of Norwegian as well as oriental folk-music, up-beat jazz-improvisation and dancing rhythms, catchy lyrics, as well as contemplative, mournful, and distinctly sacral parts. The latter characteristic in particular should be a clear sign of why Herskedal's "Slow Eastbound Train" is likely to be a perfect match to Molde Cathedral on Friday the 17th of July.

Eyolf Dale: piano
Helge Andreas Nordbakken: pecussion
