Kaizers Orchestra
5. May 2011
MOLDEJAZZ 2011 is proud to announce that the following artists will perform at this year's festival: KAIZERS ORCHESTRA, MATHIAS EICK BAND, BOBO STENSON TRIO, MISHA MENGELBERG/TYSHAWN SOREY, CELINE BONACINA TRIO, KUÁRA, DANS LES ARBRES, DAVIS/LAUBROCK/SOREY and JOHN ESCREET TRIO.

One of Norway’s best live bands, Kaizers Orchestra are scheduled to play at Romsdal Museum on Wednesday 20 July. The band is celebrating its tenth anniversary as recording artists by releasing the CD trilogy ‘Violeta Violeta’ and by appearing at a number of Norwegian festivals this summer. The same concert also features an expanded version of Mathias Eick Band. Over the last five years, Matthias has established a reputation as one of our most successful jazz musicians, enjoying great success both in Norway and abroad. His lyrical yet powerful style has deservedly won him a big audience.

The series of concerts in the intimate Forum venue include a number of fantastic pianists: established legends, pioneers of new styles and new talents. First in line is Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson, who has been a prominent member of the European jazz scene for almost 40 years and a high profile recording artist on the prestigious ECM label for almost as long. He is coming to Molde with his regular trio featuring Anders Jormin and Jon Fält. Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg is one of the most influential pianists in European jazz. In Molde, we have brought together the veteran Mengelberg, who turns 75 this year, with one of the most exciting musicians and composers in American jazz, drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Drummer Markku Ounaskari from Finland is bringing along his compatriot Samuli Mikkonen on piano and trumpeter and vocalist Per Jørgensen for a unique musical project called ’Kuára’. This trio has taken Russian psalms and Finnish-Ugric folk music as its point of departure, combining them with the musicians’ background in jazz. One of the most exciting developments on the New York scene today is the meeting between musicians from different countries and continents. The trio Kris Davis/Ingrid Laubrock/Tyshawn Sorey is an example of this. Canadian Kris Davis has made a name for herself as an important pianist and composer. The German saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock has now settled in New York after some successful years in England. Together with drummer Sorey, they have established a trio that, in ‘Paradoxical Frog’, were responsible for one of last year’s most exciting CD releases. English pianist John Escreet, who now lives in Brooklyn, has in the space of just a few years built a reputation as a highly personal performer and distinctive composer, who writes songs that are both melodically and rhythmically intricate. Eivind Opsvik will play bass at the concert in Molde, while, on drums, there will be another chance to hear Tyshawn Sorey. With their beautiful improvised chamber music, the band Dans Les Arbres featuring Christian Wallumrød, Ivar Grydeland, Ingar Zach and Xavier Charles is one of the most exciting acts to be presented on the ECM label in recent years. Baritone sax player Céline Bonacina from Paris has been a sensation in her home country with her trio. Now one of France’s best-kept and exciting secrets is ready for the rest of the world – meet her in Molde.

At the same time as the announcement of these artists, 2-Day passes will go on sale for concerts at the Romsdal Museum on 20 and 22 July.
