Two new Norwegian / International projects will be realized through the Stian Carstensen and Stefano Bollani in a duo format, and when Joshua Redman meets a Norwegian ”all star band” with Bugge Wesseltoft, Arild Andersen and Per Oddvar Johansen.
At Forum a number of exceptional woman performers will take charge, among them Sidsel Endresen, Lotte Anker, Maria Kannegaard, Iro Haarla, Ingrid Lode and Lisa Dillan who are all fundamental in separate projects. The acoustic concerts at Reknes will be headlined by legends such as Rashied Ali, Peter Brötzmann and Gianluigi Trovesi. At the Alexandrakjelleren a varied program will span from the piano legend Hank Jones with vocal sensation Roberta Gambarini to a premiere of the Kjetil Møster Sextet. And at the Perspiration Hall venue, there will be a meeting between the New Orleans clarinetist Michael Whites and his Quartet and the young musicians Kristoffer Tokle and Gunnar Bech from Molde.
Masters meet at Kulturhuset
The Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava will be performing with his Quintet at the Kulturhuset. Stefano Bollani, a young pianist from Italy which has gathered sizable worldwide attention will be performing together with Norwegian accordionist, guitarist and banjoist Stian Carstensen. The first ever meeting of this Duo was among the highlights of last years festival in Berlin.
Jon Hassell and his new project Marifa Street will perform music from “the fourth world”. Be on the lookout for fat dubgrooves as a foundation for tunes inspired by North-Africa and the Middle-East and a base for Hassells warm and transparent trumpet play.
Through the Artist in Residence, Moldejazz has created exciting and memorable meetings between musicians that has rarely known each other or have never played together. This year, Joshua Redman will be challenged by three of the foremost jazz musicians in Norway, Bugge Wesseltoft, Arild Andersen and Per Oddvar Johansen
Acoustic legends
Sonny Fortune and Rahied Ali have both performed with legends such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and together they have performed as a duo for many years. One of the veterans in European free jazz, Peter Brötzmann, will meet the Molde audience in a trio format with Norwegian drummer Paal Nilsen-Love, and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, known as high power saxophonist and bridge builder between free jazz and garage/indierock. The Italian musicians Gianluigi Trovesi on clarinet and bass-clarinet and Gianni Coscia on accordion, will present the project ”Round about Weill” where they will interpret Kurt Weills unusual music in a loving and deeply personal way.
Women take the Forum.
Humcrush (Strønen and Storløkken) are often considered as a highlight in Norwegian electronica jazz. This year in Molde, the group Humcrush will start a collaboration with the vocal artist Sidsel Endresen. Lotte Anker is among a new group of innovative and experimental jazz/improvisational musicians in Denmark. In Molde she will bring together a trio of two of the most exciting musicians from the ”downtown stage” in New York; the laptop artist Ikue Mori and the pianist Sylvie Courvosier.
On of our most intriguing jazz pianists and composers Maria Kannegaard will aslo perform at Forum with Thomas Strønen on drums. Pianist and harpist Iro Haarla from Finland will present her own Quintet with Mattias Eick on trumpet, Trygve Seim saxophones, Uffe Krokfors on bass and Jon Christensen on drums. The trio Kobert with Ingrid Lode has over the last couple of years developed their own musical sound in the crossroads between modern jazz and experimental pop music. Moldejazz is also happy to present the unique singer Lisa Dillan, using only her own voice to create matchless soundscapes, moods and expressions throughout her concerts.
From mainstream to Møster.
Super-veteran Hank Jones are in his eighties, but still considered among the greatest pianists in mainstream jazz. Mr. Jones will be playing with George Mraz on bass, Willie Jones III on drums and vocalist Roberta Gambarini. Alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon from Puerto Rico will be performing with his new Quartet. Norwegian saxophonist Kjetil Møster has put together his ”dream band” with Anders Hana (guitar): Per Zanussi (electric & acoustic bass): Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (electric & acoustic bass): Morten J. Olsen (drums and vibraphone): Kjell Nordeson (drums and vibraphone)
About a year ago, the buzz about the young pianist Robert Glasper started. This summer you will meet him at Moldejazz with Vicente Archer on bass and drummer Damion Reid.
World Saxophone Quartet has teamed up with electric bass legend Jamaladeen Tacuma and the young and sensational drummer Lee Pearson, taking on the works of Jimi Hendrix. The 23 years old Danish vocalist Malene Mortensen will also perform with a trio headed up by pianist Kasper Villaume.
New Orleans meets Molde
The Ytre Suløens has worked for years with the Moldejazz Jazzlosjen to introduce young, local musicians to jazz and improvisation. The fruit of the labor is now starting to show. This year the 17 year old drummer Kristoffer Tokle from Molde will play with New Orleans-veteran Michael White clarinet and Greg Stafford trumpet. Trombonist Gunnar Bech, also from Molde and with a past in the Jazzlosjen, will also join the lineup.
Westerhus – Isungset Duo
Westerhus – Isungset Duo pin down the extremities in the acoustic and electronic soundscapes and weld together music with great depths. Terje Isungset is sometimes referred to as both a sound artist and a shaman based on his sound. Stian Westerhus explores the boundaries of the baritone guitar and together they open up to energetic and meditative improvised music filled with surprises.
